RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Neurocritical Care Attending to join our premier Neurology team at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. This is a high-impact opportunity to practice advanced neurocritical care in a flagship tertiary care center, supporting one of the region’s leading stroke programs within New Jersey’s largest integrated healthcare system.
This position offers a consultative ICU model, where the Neurocritical Care Attending provides specialized expertise for critically ill neurological patients while collaborating closely with intensivists and multidisciplinary teams. With a structured week-on/week-off schedule and system-wide telestroke responsibilities, this role blends clinical excellence with broad system influence.
Position Overview
The Neurocritical Care Attending will provide full-time clinical and administrative services, delivering expert consultation for ICU patients with acute neurological and neurosurgical conditions. The role emphasizes subspecialty input through a consult-only model, supporting complex patient management and advancing stroke care initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Provide neurocritical care consultation for ICU patients with conditions including:
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), large vessel occlusion (LVO)
Post-operative neurosurgical cases, cerebral edema, seizures, and neurological emergencies
Collaborate with ICU teams through daily rounding, physician consultation, and family discussions
Support the management of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients
Provide 26 weeks of annual coverage in a structured week-on/week-off model:
Daily schedule: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (on-site)
Overnight coverage: 5:00 PM – 8:00 AM (unrestricted, including telestroke responsibilities)
24/7 tele-evaluation availability for stroke patients across northern RWJBarnabas Health sites
Educate residents, fellows, and clinical staff in neurocritical care
Participate in multidisciplinary quality, safety, and stroke program initiatives
Contribute to the development of treatment protocols and evidence-based care pathways
Support and maintain the Comprehensive Stroke Center certification standards
Participate in Stroke Advisory Committee and required CME activities
Engage in IRB-approved research and patient recruitment initiatives
Candidate Requirements
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology
Fellowship training in Neurocritical Care preferred
Eligible for New Jersey medical licensure
Strong clinical, communication, and leadership skills
Interest in academic medicine, education, and quality improvement
Compensation & Benefits
The anticipated salary range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey is $320,000 – $475,000 per year . The compensation offered will depend on several factors, including educational background, skills, and professional experience.
