About the Role

Job Summary The GIS Field Technician at ATCO Communications Services is responsible for supporting field data collection and geospatial documentation for telecommunications infrastructure projects. This hybrid role focuses on collecting data of Outside Plant (OSP) assets in the field and integrating collected data into GIS platforms to support engineering design, permitting, and asset management workflows. Position will be located in Illinois and will be hybrid. This entry‑level position is ideal for someone who enjoys both working outdoors and applying their GIS skillset to the engineering field. Key Responsibilities Assist OSP Engineers with on‑site inspections of fiber routes, poles, handholes, conduit paths, and related telecom infrastructure. Use GPS/GNSS devices and mobile data collection apps (e.g., Katapult, IKE, ArcGIS Field Maps) to capture spatial features and condition data. Work independently or with field teams to complete walkouts, audits, and as‑built verification. Process and integrate field data into GIS environments. Create and update GIS layers, maps, and dashboards to support project stakeholders. Perform quality control and data validation to ensure accuracy of spatial and attribute information. Collaborate with engineers, designers, and project managers to support design and permit workflows. Maintain geospatial databases in accordance with company and client standards. Qualifications Education: Associate’s degree or technical certification in GIS, Geography, Engineering Technology, Telecommunications, or a related field. Experience: 1‑2 years of experience in a similar role, preferably within the utilities industry. Valid Illinois driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork. Technical Skills Familiarity with an industry standard GIS software: e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, IQGeo, Google Earth Pro. Familiarity with an industry standard field collection software: e.g., Katapult, ikeGPS. Basic understanding of spatial data formats and databases. Experience with GPS and other data collection methods. Strong attention to detail and ability to document field conditions accurately. Soft Skills Detail‑oriented with a commitment to accuracy. Strong communication skills in both a remote and in‑person work environment. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Bonus Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering, or a related field. Understanding of OSP infrastructure and construction practices. Familiarity with RUS standards, pole attachment regulations, or fiber network components. Knowledge of, or experience with, CAD software and its integration with GIS. Experience collecting field data for telecom, power, or utility infrastructure assets. Working Conditions Hybrid work structure with fieldwork and desktop‑based GIS support (work from home). While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision due to computer work. Light to moderate lifting may be required. Outdoor fieldwork in varying weather conditions; walking and standing for extended periods. Use of employee’s own vehicle is expected.
