Job Description: Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

Position Summary: Perform security and maintenance related tasks to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. Work requires considerable walking to complete patrols. Must adhere to and not deviate from the work schedule unless cleared by the Chief of Police or the Facilities Director.

Job Duties:

  • Ensure campus security and safety and provides an official presence.
  • Makes periodic security checks for illegal entry, damage/loss, fire, and proper functioning of utilities and equipment.
  • Provides extra patrols both on foot and in the Security Vehicle and does extra searches with the camera system. Increases patrols when a possible trouble spot has been identified.
  • Is courteous in dealing with students, college personal and visiting public.
  • Complete written reports of routine and unusual events.
  • Ensure doors are locked and unlocked according to established schedules.
  • Control and monitor visitors and crowds to prevent acts of vandalism, theft, and misconduct.
  • Inspect premises for unauthorized persons, safety and fire hazards, and unsafe conditions.
  • Request assistance when needed and report emergency conditions and situations to appropriate authorities.
  • Answer questions, give directions and explain rules and regulations to students, staff and visitors as needed.
  • Ticket improperly parked vehicles and investigate accidents on campus.
  • Monitor building climate control systems and lighting equipment for proper operation. Perform minor maintenance on equipment, buildings, and vehicles.
  • Deliver bank deposits, pick up supplies, and perform other errands as needed. Sort mail and place in college staff mailboxes. Prepare outgoing mail and packages for daily pick-up.
  • Takes care of scheduling college vehicles for maintenance and sees that all college vehicles are in good working condition.
  • Take care of the mail in between the college satellite locations in Martinsville in a timely manner. Log the incoming and outgoing mail, UPS, and Fed-ex during duty hours.
  • Work with the Police Chief on planning and complying with Va. State requirements to keep Stone Hall ready to be active as a state shelter.
  • Complete all required training for the year to include Sexual Misconduct, Victim Rights, Community resources and complaint training.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Basic knowledge of PC skills, email, and record keeping
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Virginia driver's license, as well as basic first aid, adult and child CPR/AED.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Communicates effectively orally and in writing; works with individuals of diverse backgrounds; and establishes positive working relationships with external and internal constituents.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to use fair and reasonable judgment in decision making. Ability to act/react calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work varied rotating shifts while carrying equipment and performing foot and vehicle patrols.
  • Available to work evening hours.
