About the Role

Police Officer

Under limited supervision, the Police Officer will perform general policing functions intended to ensure the safety and security of the lives and property within the City. Activities include patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigative duties. Officers may be assigned to special activities of projects on an on-going or short-term basis (e.g., crime prevention investigations, school resource officer, etc.). The work performed involves a considerable risk to personal safety for self and others and requires quick decision making when determining the appropriate action to take in a given situation.

Essential duties and responsibilities include enforcing all laws and regulations, providing security, detecting violators, developing positive relationships with residents, businesses, schools, and students in assigned neighborhoods, coordinating services of different governmental and private agencies to resolve identified problems, discouraging violations by being visible and present in the community, observing unusual activity, issuing warnings or citations for violations, detaining and conducting interviews and arrests of persons violating the law, enforcing traffic laws, conducting periodic security checks of businesses and other facilities, receiving, prioritizing and responding to non-emergency calls, responding to complaints, accidents, disturbances and/or requests for police assistance, assessing each situation and determining the most appropriate response, responding to emergency situations, providing first aid to injured persons, handling crowd control, directing traffic, clearing access routes, preserving and/or collecting evidence, conducting detailed investigations of criminal activities and public safety incidents, participating as a team member with officers, supervisors and citizens, organizing resources within the community, developing and conducting crime prevention activities, serving as a resource to organizations, conducting presentations on topics identified as concerns or problems, researching and developing materials for preparing literature, maintaining records of activities and preparing reports, completing reports of accidents, injuries and property damage losses, submitting reports for supervisor's review, testifying in court proceedings, maintaining firearms and other equipment issued, communicating courteously and professionally, maintaining working relationships with others, successfully negotiating between parties, maintaining positive relationships with other agencies, working safely, following safe work practices, identifying and reporting unsafe work conditions, and performing other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum qualifications include 60 semester hours in criminal justice or a related field, or 4 years of honorable Military service in a similar position, equivalent education and experience is acceptable, must be a licensed North Dakota Peace Officer, or eligible for licensure, must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law, ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other City departments, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations, strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, valid driver's license, and SEE LATERAL REQUIREMENTS IN SUPPLEMENT INFORMATION.

To be considered as a Lateral applicant, you must have completed a Law Enforcement Skills Academy and be ND POST licensed, or hold an out-of-state peace officer license, and have at least one year of law enforcement experience.
