Job Summary
Prepares and assists physician/provider in the examination and treatment of patients in the medical office. Ability to assist physician/provider with examinations, diagnostic processes, and treatments. Arranges diagnostic testing and hospital admission. Obtains insurance authorizations. Schedules outpatient and inpatient procedures. Performs patient assessment and triage. Prepares and administers patient medication. Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing in the medical office setting.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for physician examination. Measure and record at least three vital signs per patient visit. Gather patient assessment information relating to patient's learning and education ability. Provides patient education and patient family education.
- Assess and document patient condition to the specifications of the physician/provider and written policies and procedures. Assume information management responsibilities. Provide legible and signature authenticated documentation of all actions taken to the patient's medical record and maintain proper medical records at all times.
- Perform telephone triage, communicate and adjudicate physician/provider orders and provide timely and accurate medical documentation of actions taken. Maintain examination rooms, back office area and supplies.
- Perform phlebotomy, administer injections, immunizations and other special procedures. Perform laboratory testing in compliance with written policies and procedures.
- Knowledgeable of and demonstrate skills in the principles of infection prevention, reduction and controls appropriate for the medical setting.
- Schedule doctors' orders for other providers, procedures and tests, surgery, collaborate test results, and share necessary information with Healthcare providers and patients as required. Collaborates with patient and providers to arrange diagnostic testing, specialist appointments and hospital admissions.
- Responsible to obtain authorizations from managed care insurance companies for patient referrals to specialists. Provide documentation of authorization obtainment and maintain referral and authorization records. Counsel patients in the office and over the telephone regarding the referral requirements of their insurance carrier.
- Collaborate and inform patients of necessary prep information, collection of co-pays and deductibles. Demonstrate initiative and willingness to help others on a consistent basis.
- Perform all Quality Assurance functions and procedures necessary to meet and maintain regulatory requirements. Support management decisions and the goals and objectives of the department.
- Demonstrate professional demeanor, compassion, good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude with patients, patient families, co-workers, other physician offices, hospital departments and all other entities.
- Attend continuing education classes when required. Maintains required licenses. Attend 75% of all scheduled department meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient visits, records and correspondence and maintain confidentiality of departmental issues when necessary. Actively work to ensure that patient rights are identified and met for every patient.
- Comply with all applicable policies and procedures, including, but not limited to all departmental and functional policy and procedure. Participate in performance improvement activities as requested.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of team dynamics and contribute to team building and skills related to participation in and strengthening of the multidisciplinary team approach to the delivery of patient care and organization function.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- Minimum: Nursing School Graduate
- Preferred: Licensed or Certification in Practical Nursing
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: Previous patient care experience
- Preferred: One-year (1) previous medical office desired
License/Certification Requirements
Minimum:
- Licensed Practice Nurse License in the State of Indiana
- BLS through the American Heart Association
Qualifications
