About the Role
Meridell Achievement Center is a 134-bed, seclusion free, psychiatric residential treatment facility located northwest of Austin. Our 60-acre campus is complete with mature oaks, rolling hills, and plenty of walking paths and outdoor spaces. We have 7 unique living units separated by gender, age, and development needs, a swimming pool, gymnasium, sports court and playing fields. We provide 24-hour psychiatric care to girls and boys ages 10 to 17 years old with customized therapeutic approaches and intensive behavioral programs to teach young patients to moderate their behavior, manage emotions and improve social functioning.
Lifeguards are responsible to keep an eye out for patients indulging in recreational activities in the pool area. The lifeguard maintains constant surveillance of patients in the facility while engaging in water related activities; acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patients in the event of emergency. Provides emergency care treatment and lifesaving activities, to include but not limited to resuscitation and first aid as required, until the arrival of emergency medical services. This position is seasonal from June to early August. Weekday hours 1pm to 5pm Monday through Friday. Weekend hours 9am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
Job Duties:
- Monitors the safety of patients and employees in the pool area.
- Reminds patients and staff of essential safety guidelines in the pool area.
- Observe for signs of distressed swimmers, unsafe conditions, and inclement weather.
- Initiate rescues, administer first aid, CPR or AED assistance when required.
- Performs safety checks of area before and after shift.
- Provides swim assessment to all patients.
- Ensures that all swimming equipment and activity supplies are placed in storage and locked prior to exiting the pool area.
- Ensure that all patients apply sunscreen prior to entering the pool and are provided ear drops when exiting the pool area.
- Consistently promote and adhere to Service Excellence standards and workplace safety standards.
- Consistently follow facility protocol for maintaining excellent attendance.
- Maintain required certifications for employment.
- Other general activity duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education/Training: High school education or GED required.
- Must be 21 years old or older.
- Experience: One (1) year of experience related to the supervision of related swimming activities and safety in and around pools. Knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques and understanding of mental illness, preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: Current lifeguard certification (Deep water pool over 5ft deep) First aid/CPR/AED certification
- Knowledge and Skills: Good communication to collaborate with facility employees and patients. Ability to work various shifts as necessary. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient and facility information. Ability to understand and demonstrate appropriate boundaries between self and patients. Capacity to accept feedback and utilize it to improve performance. Mental and emotional stability and maturity.
