Licensed Respiratory Therapist
About the Role
Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is seeking a Licensed Respiratory Therapist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team in a dynamic hospital environment. MVHS offers comprehensive healthcare services, including emergency care, specialty services, and primary care to improve community health in Upstate New York, and fosters a supportive culture that emphasizes teamwork, respect, and employee welfare.
In this role, the Licensed Respiratory Therapist delivers high-quality, evidence-based respiratory care to a diverse patient population across acute, step-down, emergency, and critical care settings. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team, the therapist performs comprehensive respiratory assessments, develops and adjusts care plans, and ensures safe and effective implementation of all ordered therapies. Typical responsibilities include initiating, managing, and weaning patients from invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation; administering oxygen and aerosolized medications; performing chest physiotherapy and airway clearance techniques; and providing ongoing monitoring of patients’ respiratory status.
The therapist obtains and analyzes arterial blood gases, interprets results, and communicates significant changes promptly to the care team. They respond rapidly to respiratory-related emergencies, including rapid response and code situations, and provide skilled airway management and life support interventions within the scope of practice. The role also involves performing pulmonary function testing and bedside spirometry, assisting with diagnostic procedures, and ensuring that all respiratory equipment—including ventilators, BiPAP/CPAP devices, nebulizers, and high-flow oxygen systems—is used safely and maintained according to departmental standards.
Education is a key component of this position. The Licensed Respiratory Therapist provides clear, compassionate instruction to patients and families on respiratory conditions, inhaler and device techniques, medication adherence, and strategies to promote lung health and prevent readmissions. The therapist adheres to strict infection prevention and control protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfection of respiratory equipment, and compliance with isolation precautions.
MVHS supports professional growth and advancement, offering opportunities to build specialized skills in critical care, emergency medicine, and other specialty areas. The Licensed Respiratory Therapist is expected to maintain active licensure, participate in ongoing competencies and in-service education, and contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the department. This is an on-site, hospital-based role that requires flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet patient care needs.
MVHS provides a comprehensive and competitive compensation and benefits package, which may include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, retirement plan options such as a 401(k), paid time off, and eligibility for performance-based bonuses. Candidates who value a collaborative workplace, are committed to clinical excellence, and are passionate about supporting the respiratory health of patients in the Upstate New York community are encouraged to apply.
