Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of parks, grounds, and buildings.

Mows and maintains parks, streetscapes, beautification areas, public building grounds and highway right of ways. Cleans and maintains tennis courts, parking lots, playgrounds, sidewalks and boardwalks.
Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.
Pull and spray weeds around trees and all shrub and flower beds in accordance with the Department of Pesticide Regulation. Maintains application records.
Installs turf, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
Installs and maintains benches, picnic tables, signs and other amenities in parks and beautification areas.
Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
Picks up and disposes of litter, paper, and rubbish from parks, playgrounds, public building grounds, streetscapes, highway right of ways, sidewalks and beautification areas.
Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
Locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs.
Prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
Performs custodial work as assigned including changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, cleaning floors including cleaning spills and sweeping, dumping trash receptacles and replacing liners.
Operates a variety of lawn, landscaping, and janitorial equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, aerators, line machines, blowers, chain saws, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, herbicide/fertilizer sprayers and spreaders, cultivating machines, etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as electric and hand saws, pitch forks, drills, sanders, hand and power tools, hammer, hoe pick, pruning shears, rake, shovel, spade, hose, power blower, turf maintenance tools, carpentry tools, painting tools, plumbing tools, electrical tools, cement finishing tools, brooms, mops brushes, scrapers, squeegees, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as weed and pest control chemicals, cleaning cloths, detergents, filets, solvents, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including the Horticulturist, the Director of Urban Land Management, co-workers, other City departments and staff, and the general public.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May assist with recreation programs and special events.
Is required to fill in other positions within the department.
Performs other related work as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, bright/dim light, traffic hazards, and/or toxic/poisonous agents. Minimum qualifications & Requirements

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Must have a valid state driver's license or the ability to obtain one. Must have a valid South Carolina Pesticide Applicator License (Category 3) or the ability to obtain one.
