About the Role

Law Enforcement Officer

Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to enforce the laws of the State of Colorado and the County and to safeguard the lives, property and rights of residents of the County. Work requires that the employee cooperate and work closely with investigators, other deputy sheriffs, line supervisors, other law enforcement agencies and the public. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of general law enforcement work. Reports to a Sergeant. Work involves responding to complaint calls, investigating crimes, mediating civil disputes, preparing reports and patrolling the County in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects, enforcing traffic laws, collecting and submitting evidence related to crimes, and testifying in court.

Salary ranges from $42.97 to $54.37 per hour. Lateral pay range based on a one for one year credit. $5000 sign-on bonus following the completion of all training, to include the Field Training Program.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) is seeking applicants with two-years patrol experience as a full-time peace officer who are currently employed by a state, county or municipal law enforcement agency and in good standing; or have been separated as a peace officer for two years or less.

Essential job functions include answering complaint calls, investigating crimes, patrolling an assigned area of the County in an official vehicle to enforce and maintain law and order, conducting preliminary investigations of felony crimes committed in the County, mediating and keeping the peace during civil disputes, utilizing computers to complete reports, preparing a variety of reports related to criminal and civil cases, operating two-way radio and mobile data computer (MDC), enforcing state traffic laws, providing field training and evaluating new deputy recruits, and appearing in court as a witness to give testimony.

Additional job duties include answering inquiries from the public, obtaining patrol vehicle inspections, testifying in civil and criminal cases, providing security and/or traffic control for special events, serving assigned court documents, patrolling assigned area to enforce laws, investigating crimes or suspicious activities, and performing other related work as required.

Physical requirements include operating a variety of machinery and equipment, exerting force to move objects, walking, standing, running and physical confrontation. Data conception, interpersonal communication, language ability, intelligence, verbal aptitude, numerical aptitude, form/spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, interpersonal temperament, and physical communication are also required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include general knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, procedures and investigation techniques, general knowledge of County, state and federal laws relative to civil and criminal processes, general knowledge of the locations of streets, roads, highways and the geography of the County, general knowledge of modern criminal investigative practices and procedures, general knowledge of federal, state and local laws relative to criminal investigations, general knowledge of the standard practices, materials, techniques and equipment associated with criminal investigations, general knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position, general knowledge of the content and purpose of legal papers, general knowledge of local laws, ordinances and state statutes pertaining to the commitment, confinement and release of prisoners, general knowledge of computers, ability to use common office machines, skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment, ability to exercise sound judgment, ability to maintain discipline and order in a jail, ability to exercise tact, courtesy, firmness and fairness, ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion, ability to apply interpretation of laws, ability to prepare clear and concise reports, ability to make observations and remember names, faces, and various details, ability to present court testimony effectively, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Education: GED, High School Diploma. Experience: Two years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer. Certifications: Certified as a law enforcement officer by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, and completion of initial field training program. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Colorado.
