Data Governance Analyst
About the Role
Location and Availability Richmond, VA – Hybrid/Local. On‑site required: 2 days per week. Position Summary We are currently seeking a Data Governance Analyst who will report to the Data Curation Lead within the Office of Data Governance and Analytics. This role will curate metadata, develop end‑to‑end data lineage diagrams, build and maintain business glossaries, author data quality rules, and perform other data governance functions required by the Virginia Office of Data Governance and Analytics. Key Responsibilities Maintain and administer the Commonwealth Business Glossary. Identify, implement and consume metadata and data modelling tools. Develop and maintain end‑to‑end data lineage diagrams that trace data from source systems through transformations to consumption. Support and contribute to the creation and maintenance of data models. Author data quality rules, thresholds, and validation checks against critical data elements. Technical Job Responsibilities Business Glossaries / Data Catalog Maintain a data catalog and business metadata for strategic data assets. Build data taxonomy, data dictionary, and business glossaries of data assets. On‑board domain data sources to the data catalog. Metadata Work with business analysts and solution designers to identify critical data elements and capture related metadata. Oversee maintenance of metadata artifacts, reporting and escalation of gaps and inconsistencies, resolving issues. Develop and maintain end‑to‑end data lineage diagrams that trace data from source systems through all transformations to consuming applications and reports; ensure diagrams are accurate, current, and interpretable by both technical and business stakeholders. Complete metadata and data quality audits, act on findings, and report audit progress. Respond to questions from various teams, troubleshoot issues, and update metadata as needed. Data Quality Rules Define, document, and implement data quality rules, thresholds, and validation checks for critical data elements across agency data assets. Other Responsibilities Use Power Platform to automate agency work. Utilize JIRA as a task‑tracking tool to keep stakeholders updated on progress. Perform self‑management tasks such as monitoring progress, providing progress summaries, assisting in risk identification, and monitoring mitigation responses. Assist the Office of the Chief Data Officer or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor; may be required to work outside regular hours as directed by the supervisor. Required Experience 3–5 years of dedicated data governance experience with demonstrated, hands‑on proficiency in the following areas: Metadata curation and management. Developing end‑to‑end data lineage diagrams. Building and maintaining business glossaries. Authoring data quality rules and validation checks. Experience with a metadata management or data catalog platform (e.g., Microsoft Purview, Informatica, Alation, Collibra). Experience with SQL and a solid understanding of data and systems infrastructures. Excellent attention to detail; strong work ethic and positive attitude to get things done. Strong communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated knowledge of data governance frameworks, policies, and best practices (e.g., DAMA‑DMBOK); familiarity with data governance roles and responsibilities within a government or enterprise context. Candidate must continually meet requirements of the Conflict‑of‑Interest Act, pass a fingerprint background check, and sign and adhere to the Confidentiality Statement at the end of this document. Desired Experience Azure and/or data certifications; experience in a big‑data environment or data security. Experience with data quality profiling tools or platforms (e.g., Collibra DQ, Informatica Data Quality, Alation) and familiarity with data quality dimensions (completeness, accuracy, consistency, timeliness). #J-18808-Ljbffr
